Volunteer

The Accokeek Foundation offers unique opportunities for volunteers who want to be a part of preserving the cultural history, natural resources, and agriculture of Southern Maryland.

​

With the support of almost 300 volunteers each year, the Foundation offers engaging and educational programs to the community.  Volunteers work alongside staff members to help steward and maintain Piscataway Park, provide event and program support, and engage the community.

​

Whether you just want to volunteer for the day, or are looking for a regular volunteer position, we have opportunities to fit all interests and skill levels.

Volunteers under the age of 18 must be supervised by a parent/guardian for the duration of their shift onsite.

Farmhands

Livestock Care

Help care for the Accokeek Foundation's heritage breed livestock. Farmhands support through feeding animals, managing pastures, educating visitors, and maintaining the barnyard. Regular volunteer shifts are expected.

Green Thumbs

Gardening & Horticulture

Tend the gardens and field crops of the National Colonial Farm! Assist agriculture staff in agricultural work including: planting, weeding, watering, pest-management, harvesting, and seed-saving. Regular volunteer shifts are expected.

Piscataway Park Stewards

Stewardship

Looking for a way to help care for Piscataway Park and willing to help out wherever is needed? Projects completed by Piscataway Park Stewards include: maintain trails, care for visitor spaces, clean up trash, and more. Help keep Piscataway Park visitor-friendly and clean.

Special Events Team

Event Support

Make our public events possible through volunteering. Event support includes: parking, surveying guests, managing ticket check-in, orienting event participants, manning event stations, marketing events, and more!

Educational Support Team

Education

Enjoy working with youth and inspiring visitors to be lifelong learners? Join our Education team as first/third person characters, support staff, or tour guides for our school programs and public tours/programs.

Visitor Center Support

Visitor Services

Be the friendly face on the front line as you orient visitors to the park, welcome them to programs, manage daily sales for the gift shop, and answer visitor questions about the park.

Stitch 'n Time Club

Textile Arts

Seeking novice and experienced fiber artists! Help process the wool from the Foundation's flock of Hog Island sheep, assist in the creating of colonial clothing for historical interpreters, and share your knowledge of heritage skills with the public.

Bluebird Monitoring

Citizen Science

Preserve the natural biodiversity of Piscataway Park by helping to monitor the Foundation's Ken Otis Bluebird Trail. Monitors track nesting data throughout the mating season and help maintain nest boxes for native cavity nesters.

Specialized Interpretive Support Team

Historical Interpretation

Do you have special skills or talents in 1st person interpretation, historical trades, musical performance, museum theatre, exhibit development, or historical research? Volunteers in this role serve to interpret the stories of European, Indigenous, and African American people who called Piscataway Park home.

Park Ambassador

Visitor Services

Are you gifted in visitor engagement and do you enjoy answering questions? Park Ambassadors help engage visitors respectfully and responsibly as they engage with Piscataway Park, answering questions and encouraging adherence to park expectations.

Invasive Management Team

Stewardship

Seeking volunteers to help remove and manage invasive plants growing in Piscataway Park. Team members will help identify, monitor, remove, and prevent invasives in pre-identified areas as part of our Native Plant Restoration project.

Shoreline Cleanup

Citizen Science

Calling all Trash Avengers, Plastic Picker-uppers, and Shoreline Stewards. Twice a day, the tides of the Potomac deliver new trash piles to the Piscataway Park Shoreline. Come and be apart of the the team responsible for returning our shoreline to a pre-plastic state.
