Located minutes from the National Harbor, Alexandria, and downtown Washington, D.C., the Accokeek Foundation’s Education Center was designed with a vision of sustainability at its core. With green features such as a living roof, well designed daylighting, FSC certified wood, and rainwater reuse, we are able to minimize the short and long term impact of this building on the surrounding ecosystems, as well as regional demands and air, water and light pollution. Surrounded by expansive views of the National Colonial Farm, pastoral fields, the Potomac River and Mount Vernon, the Center and the surrounding grounds is an ideal location to host a special event, corporate retreat, or organizational meeting.

About the Education Center

education center front smallWith support from foundations, corporations, state and federal government, and committed individual donors, the Education Center was constructed in 2005 to offer expanded educational space for the Accokeek Foundation’s programs.  A model of environmentally friendly sustainable design–from its vegetated roof, wildlife habitat, and rain gardens, to rain barrels and recycled materials–this “green” building creates opportunities for conservation education and provides space lectures, workshops, classes, community forums, and special events. These green features are just another way the Accokeek Foundation uses the physical environment (natural and human-made) as a living classroom.

The Education Center measures 44′ by 26′, has a vaulted ceiling, plenty of light and glass doors leading to the deck which provide natural sunlight and views of the landscape. A pull-down screen is available for slide presentations, and some audiovisual equipment is available for use. Restrooms and a prep kitchen are adjacent to the meeting room. Maximum room capacity is 185 people (standing) and 120 (seated).
