SUMMARY:Winter's Eve and Silent Art Auction
DESCRIPTION:Kick off the holiday season with a delightful adaptation of Dickens’ classic ghost story. Performed as an old-time radio show with live sound effects, “A Colonial Christmas Carol” features Scrooge as a tobacco factor and Bob Cratchit as a free black. After the performance, stroll out to the seasonally-decorated National Colonial Farm with hot cider in hand and sing a few carols by the blazing fire. And don’t miss the opportunity to purchase a gift for someone special at the Silent Art Auction, which showcases the craftsmanship of the farm’s Stitch ‘n Time textile club and other fine art by local artists. All proceeds from the auction will support the educational and interpretive programs of the National Colonial Farm. Thanks to our friends at Old Line Bank for their support of this event. Performance Schedule: 4:30 – 5:30 pm “A Colonial Christmas Carol” (Education Center) 5:30 – 7:00 pm Christmas Caroling around the fire (Colonial Site) 6:15 – 7:00 pm The Weaver Family performs Holiday Favorites (Education Center) Silent Auction Preview The auction bidding will close at 6:30 pm on December 8. Winning bids will be announced at the close of the event. Winners not present will be notified by phone or email. Following is a snippet of some of the items available for auction. There are simply too many to list here, we hope you'll be able to join us for this holiday event to see what other fine works of craftsmanship and artistry will be available. Hand-knitted Heritage Sheep's Wool Afghan – Accokeek Foundation Stitch 'n Time Club Starting Bid: $175 Current Bid: $200 (Bid via email before and during the auction!) This afghan was hand-knitted by volunteer members of the Stitch 'n Time Textile Club who began the project in early 2011 using heritage sheep's wool from the National Colonial Farm. The wool was all hand-washed and processed at the farm. "Sunset on the Potomac" limited edition, signed and framed by the artist, Christopher James Ward Starting Bid: $1,800 Current Bid: $0 (be the first to bid via email before the auction!) The "Sunset on the Potomac" limited edition print and frame was donated by Alan and Gail McCurry and the artist, Christopher James Ward. Chris is an American landscape and maritime painter, best known for the rich luminosity and detail of his work, and as M. Melissa Wolfe, curator of the Columbus Museum of Art writes, "Ward's contributions to this genre is fresh and original, as equally enlivened by the boldness of a personal vision as it is unencumbered by expressions of indebtedness." Chris's originals can be viewed at Principle Gallery, a fine art gallery located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. "Circa 1800 Tobacco Barn" oil painting with custom frame – Jeff Thompson Starting Bid: $300 Current Bid: $0 (be the first to bid via email before the auction!) This lovely depiction of the historic tobacco barn located at the National Colonial Farm was painted by Jeff Thompson of Colonial Woodwrights. Jeff has been a long-time friend of the National Colonial Farm, specializing in historic building restoration. His recent restoration work has been for the farm's 18th century farmhouse, Laurel Branch, and the tobacco barn. The frame was custom made using wood from the barn door that was replaced during the restoration work this summer. Glass and Driftwood Windchimes – Weim Design These windchimes are created from fusible glass and driftwood found along the banks of the Potomac River. Each piece of unique driftwood is cleaned and sprayed with a light coat of polyurethane, to help preserve and enhance the color of the wood. It is then adorned with pieces of fusible glass, created and cut by designer Shawna Buchsen. Double Irish Chain Quilt – Mary Lynn Davis Starting Bid: $75 This twin size quilt has a double Irish chain pattern in the middle, with a Seminole pattern border, done in shades of green, and a white on white nautical print. The batting is low-loft polyester. This quilt was machine-pieced and hand-tied by Mary Lynn Davis. Mary Lynn is the mother of our Livestock Manager, Polly Festa.
